How it works

Most domain names have 3 different stages or status, the first one being ACTIVE, which means that the domain is registered and that it's resolving at root-server level. The second status is REDEMPTION PERIOD, which means that a domain name wasn't renewed before its expiration date and therefore has entered a "not-so-graceful" period, during which the domain can still be renewed but a penalty or "restore fee" has to be paid to both, the registrar and the registry. The third and last status is Pending Delete, which means that the domain can't be renewed anymore and that it will be "released" (actually it's deleted) from the registry's database. Most domains that fall in the Redemption Period aren't renewed, as the fees that have to be paid to have the domain restored aren't exactly cheap (ranging from US$50.00 to US$120.00), that's why our systems start tracking domains as soon as they fall in the redemption period.

Then we keep an eye on them until they are under the Pending Delete status, which means that in a few days they will be deleted from the database and can be registered again. Most domains added to our database are in the Pending Delete status, as we can be sure that they won't be renewed.

After a domain is added to our database, we keep working on it. We run several dictionary-based filters to determine if a domain should be considered as premium or not (premium domains are usually 1-2 words, without hyphens and that actually make sense) and even after that, we run a human-based filter to sort out premium domains that aren't based on dictionary words (like 3-character domains, all-number domains that have a meaning, some "slang" abbreviations that could have a positive marketing impact and such).

Then we browse the main search engines, directories and major websites to see if a domain has a valid pagerank, has incoming links, is listed at search engines or directories and other factors that could have a possitive impact on the domain's quality.

We compile all this information and format it to make it human-readable and what's most important, to point out the relevance of each domain.
